ENGLISH MACKEREL – FROZEN SEA FISHING & PIKE BAIT
English mackerel is one of the classic UK sea-fishing baits. Naturally oily, strongly scented and instantly recognisable to predatory fish, it is an extremely versatile bait for both shore and boat fishing.
It can be fished as whole fish, fillets, strips, chunks or sections, making it suitable for everything from small shore baits to substantial presentations for rays, huss and conger.
English mackerel is also a proven pike deadbait, either fished whole or in sections.
HOW TO FISH ENGLISH MACKEREL
For bass and cod, cut a tapered strip or fillet and hook it so the flesh releases scent while the bait remains streamlined.
For rays and huss, use a larger fillet, chunk or section.
For whiting and mixed species, small strips make excellent baits on multi-hook rigs.
Mackerel is naturally oily, so even a relatively small piece can produce a strong scent trail.

A mackerel and squid cocktail is a proven sea-fishing combination.

ENGLISH MACKEREL FOR PIKE
Mackerel is one of the classic pike deadbaits, providing a strong scent and a substantial natural fish presentation.
Fish it whole, halved or in sections, either on the bottom, float-ledgered or suspended beneath a float.
Always use an appropriate Wrigglers Wire Pike Trace with Wrigglers Barbed Treble Hooks:
Size 8 — smaller mackerel and sections.
Size 6 — excellent all-round choice for medium-sized deadbaits.
Size 4 — larger whole mackerel and substantial deadbaits.
Keep the treble points clearly exposed and match the hook spacing to the size of the bait.
TOP TIP
When cutting mackerel strips, make them tapered rather than square and bulky. A streamlined strip presents naturally, casts better and gives the hook plenty of clearance.
For larger baits or harder casting, secure the presentation with bait elastic or combine mackerel with squid.
