SPANISH MACKEREL – FROZEN SEA FISHING & PIKE BAIT
Spanish mackerel is a soft, oily fish bait that releases plenty of natural fish scent into the water. Its softer flesh and skin make it excellent for producing juicy strips, fillets, chunks and larger fish baits.
A versatile bait for cod, bass, rays, huss, conger and dogfish, Spanish mackerel can also be used as a pike deadbait, either whole or in sections.
Because Spanish mackerel has soft skin and flesh, bait elastic is particularly useful when making larger baits or casting any distance.
HOW TO FISH SPANISH MACKEREL
For cod and bass, cut a tapered strip or fillet and secure it neatly along the hook with bait elastic.
For rays and huss, use a larger fillet, chunk or section of fish. Build the bait around the hook while keeping the point and gape completely exposed.
For conger and other larger species, substantial sections can be used with appropriately heavy tackle.
Smaller strips can also be used for whiting, codling and general shore fishing.

SPANISH MACKEREL + SQUID
This is one of the best ways to make a stronger Spanish mackerel bait.
The Spanish mackerel provides the fish scent and oils, while the tougher squid helps support the softer bait and produces a presentation better able to withstand casting.
For cod and bass, fish the cocktail on a Pulley or Pulley Pennel with a Wrigglers Octopus Beak or Takumi Hook.
For rays and huss, increase the bait size and use a Pulley Pennel or Up & Over Rig with an Octopus Beak, Mutsu Circle or True Circle Hook.
SPANISH MACKEREL FOR PIKE
Spanish mackerel also makes an effective pike deadbait.
It can be fished whole or in sections and presented on the bottom, float-ledgered or suspended beneath a float.
Always use an appropriate Wrigglers Wire Pike Trace.

Size 8 — smaller deadbaits or sections.
Size 6 — a good all-round choice for medium-sized Spanish mackerel.
Size 4 — larger whole fish and substantial deadbaits.

TOP TIP
Spanish mackerel is a soft bait, so don't over-handle it.
Shape the bait neatly around the hook and secure it with bait elastic without crushing the flesh. For harder casting, combine Spanish mackerel with squid to make a stronger, more durable cocktail.
