RED MULLET FOR BAIT

PREMIUM OILY SEA BAIT

RED MULLET – FROZEN SEA FISHING & PIKE BAIT

Red mullet is a versatile natural fish bait suitable for both UK sea fishing and pike deadbaiting. It can be fished whole, cut into sections or filleted, giving anglers plenty of options depending on the target species and presentation.

For sea fishing, red mullet makes a useful fish bait for rays, bass, cod, huss, conger and dogfish. Whole red mullet also make an attractive alternative pike deadbait when you want to offer something different from the usual mackerel, sardine or smelt.

SEA FISHING WITH RED MULLET

Red mullet can be used as fillets, strips, chunks or larger section baits.

For cod and bass, use a strip or fillet on a Pulley Rig. For rays and huss, step up to a larger section or fillet and use a Pulley Pennel or Up & Over presentation.

Larger baits can be secured with bait elastic to keep everything streamlined for casting while leaving the hook point and gape clear.

BEST WRIGGLERS SEA RIGS & HOOKS

Pulley Rig — red mullet strips and fillets for cod and bass.
Hooks: Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank or Octopus Beak Hooks.

Pulley Pennel Rig — larger fillets and longer red mullet baits for cod, bass and rays.
Hooks: Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank or Octopus Beak Hooks.

Up & Over Rig — excellent for a larger red mullet bait on a long snood targeting rays and huss.
Hooks: Wrigglers Mutsu Circle Hooks or True Circle Hooks.

Running Ledger — a simple option for presenting red mullet naturally on the bottom from shore or boat.
Hooks: Wrigglers Octopus Beak, Mutsu Circle or True Circle Hooks, matched to bait size and target species.

RED MULLET & SQUID COCKTAIL

Red mullet can also be combined with squid to produce a tougher cocktail bait.

Use a strip or fillet of red mullet with a strip of squid and secure the bait with elastic. The squid helps hold the presentation together, particularly when making a powerful shore cast.

RED MULLET FOR PIKE

Whole red mullet make an excellent alternative pike deadbait and can be presented either on the bottom or beneath a float.

Fish them using a Wrigglers Wire Pike Trace fitted with Wrigglers Barbed Treble Hooks, matching the hook size to the size of the deadbait.

Size 8 Trebles — smaller red mullet
Size 6 Trebles — good all-round choice
Size 4 Trebles — larger red mullet and bigger deadbait presentations

Always use an appropriate wire trace when intentionally targeting pike, and position the trebles so the points remain clear of the bait.

    Great Pike Bait!

Picked up a couple of packs of these when we collected a load of mackerel for pile bait! Some of them were big enough to eat, but all are to be used for bait. The first one I used landed me a double figure pike last season! Can't wait to fish more of them next season!
