SARDINES – FROZEN SEA FISHING & PIKE BAIT
Sardines are a soft, oily and highly scented bait suitable for both UK sea fishing and pike deadbaiting.
Their naturally oily flesh releases plenty of scent into the water, making them an excellent choice for predatory species. Sardines can be fished whole, as fillets, strips or chunks for sea fishing, while whole sardines make an excellent pike deadbait.
SEA FISHING WITH SARDINES
Sardines are an excellent bait for rays, bass, cod, huss, conger and dogfish.
For cod and bass, use a sardine strip or fillet. For rays and huss, a larger fillet or section makes a strong bottom bait.
Because sardines are naturally soft, secure larger sea baits with bait elastic, keeping the hook point and gape clear.

SARDINE & SQUID COCKTAIL
Sardine and squid make an excellent sea-fishing cocktail.
The sardine provides plenty of oil and scent, while the tougher squid helps hold the softer sardine together. Wrap a strip of squid around the sardine and secure it with bait elastic for a tougher, more streamlined casting bait.
SARDINES FOR PIKE
Whole sardines are also an excellent pike deadbait. Their oily flesh produces plenty of scent, while their size makes them suitable for both float-fished and ledgered deadbait presentations.
Fish them on a Wrigglers Wire Pike Trace fitted with Wrigglers Barbed Treble Hooks.
Size 8 Trebles — smaller sardines and smaller presentations
Size 6 Trebles — excellent all-round choice
Size 4 Trebles — larger sardines and bigger deadbait presentations
Always use an appropriate wire trace when intentionally fishing for pike and keep the treble points clear of the bait.

TOP TIP: Keep sardines frozen or well chilled until needed. They're naturally soft, so careful baiting makes a big difference. For sea fishing, use bait elastic where required; for pike, mount the sardine securely on the wire trace while keeping the treble points exposed.
