LUGWORM – CLASSIC SEA FISHING BAIT
Lugworm is one of the most proven and versatile natural baits in UK sea fishing. It has been catching fish from beaches, estuaries and piers for generations and remains a staple bait for cod, whiting, bass, flounder, plaice and other bottom-feeding species.
Lugworm can be fished on its own, bunched to create a larger bait, or used as the base of some excellent cocktails. It is especially useful when you want a natural worm bait with plenty of scent that can be scaled from small scratching rigs right through to a substantial cod bait.
LUGWORM FOR COD
Lugworm and cod fishing go hand in hand.
For general cod and codling fishing, thread one or more worms up the hook and snood to create a long, streamlined bait. A Pulley Rig is an excellent choice when casting a single lug bait from the shore.
Use a Wrigglers Chinu Hook for smaller, neater lug baits and a Wrigglers Aberdeen Hook where the long shank helps with presenting and removing worm baits.
For a larger cod bait or cocktail, step up to a Wrigglers Octopus Beak or Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hook.
LUGWORM FOR WHITING
Lugworm is an excellent bait for whiting, particularly when fishing multiple-hook rigs.
Use smaller pieces of lug on a 2-Hook or 3-Hook Flapper Rig with Wrigglers Aberdeen or Chinu Hooks.
There's no need for a huge bait. A neat piece of lug with the hook point clearly exposed will often outfish an oversized offering when whiting are feeding.
Add a small fish or squid tipper when you want extra scent and a little more durability.
LUGWORM FOR BASS
Bass will readily take lugworm, particularly around surf beaches and estuary ground.
Fish a good-sized lug bait on a Running Ledger for a natural presentation, or use a Pulley Rig when more casting distance is required.
A Wrigglers Chinu Hook is a particularly good match for a neat lug bait. For a larger bunch of worms or a lug-and-fish cocktail, use a Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hook.
LUGWORM FOR FLATFISH
Lugworm is a first-class bait for flounder and plaice.
Keep the bait relatively small and fish it on a 2-Hook Flapper or Running Ledger.
Wrigglers Aberdeen Hooks are particularly useful here. Their longer shank makes worm presentation straightforward and gives plenty of room for a neat lug bait.
Wrigglers Chinu Hooks are another good option when you want a shorter, more compact hook pattern.
LUGWORM COCKTAILS
This is where lugworm becomes even more useful.
Lugworm + Squid — one of the most useful combinations. Squid gives the softer worm bait extra toughness and produces an excellent cod and bass bait.
Lugworm + Mackerel — adds oily fish scent. Good for cod, whiting and general shore fishing.
Lugworm + Herring — another strong worm-and-fish combination, particularly when targeting cod.
Lugworm + Sprat — use a small piece of sprat as a fish tipper for codling and whiting.
Lugworm + Anchovy — a small oily tipper that adds plenty of scent without making the bait excessively large.
Lugworm + Peeler Crab — a strong natural combination for cod and bass, particularly around estuaries and mixed ground.
LUGWORM & SQUID FOR COD
For a bigger cod bait, this combination deserves special mention.
Build a substantial lug bait and add a strip of squid alongside it, then secure the bait lightly with elastic.
The lug provides the worm scent while the squid helps hold the bait together during casting and fishing.
Fish it on a Pulley or Pulley Pennel Rig using a Wrigglers Octopus Beak or Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hook.
Keep the hook point and gape completely clear.
BEST WRIGGLERS HOOKS FOR LUGWORM
Wrigglers Aberdeen Hooks — one of the best matches for lugworm. The long shank is particularly useful for threading and presenting worm baits. Excellent for whiting, flatfish and general shore fishing.
Wrigglers Chinu Hooks — ideal for compact lug baits targeting bass, codling and mixed species.
Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hooks — step up to these when you're building larger lug baits or lug-and-fish cocktails.
Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hooks — suited to bigger cod baits and substantial worm-and-squid presentations.
MATCH THE RIG TO THE FISHING
2-Hook Flapper — whiting, flounder, plaice and general shore fishing.
3-Hook Flapper — smaller lug baits when scratching for mixed species.
Running Ledger — excellent for bass and flounder where a simple, natural bottom presentation is wanted.
Pulley Rig — larger single-hook lug baits for cod and bass.
Pulley Pennel — substantial lugworm cocktails and bigger cod baits.
BAIT PRESENTATION
With lugworm, presentation matters more than simply putting as many worms as possible on the hook.
Thread the worm carefully onto the hook and, where appropriate, continue it up the snood. Build the bait to suit the hook rather than burying a small hook inside a huge bunch of worm.
For longer casts, a small amount of bait elastic can help keep a larger lug bait together, particularly when squid or fish is added.
Always leave the hook point and gape exposed.
COMPLETE YOUR SETUP WITH WRIGGLERS TACKLE
Pair your lugworm with Wrigglers Aberdeen Hooks • Chinu Hooks • Octopus Beak Hooks • Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hooks • 2-Hook Flapper Rigs • 3-Hook Flapper Rigs • Pulley Rigs • Pulley Pennel Rigs • Power Swivels • Rig Line • Clips • Beads & Rig Components.
TOP TIP
Don't automatically use a massive lug bait.
For whiting and flatfish, a smaller, neatly presented piece of worm can be far more effective. For cod and bass, increase the bait size or add squid, fish or peeler crab when you want a stronger cocktail.
The important thing is to match the amount of lugworm, hook size and rig to the fish you're actually targeting.
