DEVON SANDEELS – FROZEN SEA FISHING BAIT
Our Devon sandeels are caught by us, packed by us and blast frozen by us, giving Wrigglers control of the bait from the sea to the freezer.
Sandeels are one of the classic natural baits for UK sea fishing and an important prey fish for many predatory species. Their long, slim profile makes them particularly effective for bass, rays, turbot, brill, pollack and cod.
Fish them whole, doubled up or combined with squid, matching the size of the bait, hook and rig to the species you're targeting.
BASS
A whole sandeel is a superb natural bass bait.
Keep the bait straight and streamlined and fish it on a Running Ledger or Pulley Rig.
Use a Wrigglers Chinu Hook for smaller presentations or a Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hook for larger whole sandeels and cocktails.
TURBOT & BRILL
Whole sandeels are a natural choice for turbot and brill.
A Running Ledger with a longer snood allows the bait to move naturally close to the seabed.
Keep the tackle balanced to the bait. A Wrigglers Chinu Hook is an excellent choice for a neat whole-sandeel presentation.
RAYS
For rays, increase the bait size.
Fish a large whole sandeel, two sandeels together, or sandeel combined with squid.
A Pulley Pennel or Up & Over Rig works well with the larger presentation.
Use Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hooks for substantial fish baits, or Wrigglers Mutsu Circle / True Circle Hooks when fishing a circle-hook setup.
COD
Sandeel is an excellent cod bait on its own, but sandeel and squid is one of the standout combinations.
Lay a strip of squid alongside or around the sandeel and secure it neatly with bait elastic. The squid adds toughness and helps the finished bait withstand harder casting.
Fish it on a Pulley or Pulley Pennel Rig with a Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank or Octopus Beak Hook.
POLLACK
Whole sandeels make an excellent natural bait for pollack around rocks, reefs and deeper water.
Keep the presentation slim and natural. Use only enough bait elastic to hold everything securely and always leave the hook point and gape completely clear.
SANDEEL + SQUID COCKTAIL
One of our favourite ways to fish sandeel.
Whole Sandeel + Squid combines the natural profile of a baitfish with the additional toughness of squid.
It's an excellent cocktail for bass, cod and rays, particularly when you need to cast the bait hard.
For a larger presentation, try a Wrigglers Pulley Pennel with a Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hook.
MATCH THE WRIGGLERS HOOK TO THE BAIT
Small Sandeels — Wrigglers Chinu or Aberdeen Hooks.
Medium Whole Sandeels — Wrigglers Chinu or Takumi Hooks.
Large Whole Sandeels & Cocktails — Wrigglers Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank or Octopus Beak Hooks.
Large Ray Baits / Circle-Hook Setups — Wrigglers Mutsu Circle or True Circle Hooks.
The hook should complement the sandeel rather than overpower it.

TOP TIP
Keep whole sandeels straight and streamlined.
Use only enough bait elastic to secure the bait. When you need a stronger presentation for hard casting, add a strip of squid rather than covering the sandeel in excessive elastic.
