RIVER TEIGN PEELER CRAB – FROZEN SEA FISHING BAIT

Wrigglers River Teign Peeler Crab is a superb natural sea-fishing bait, particularly for bass and smoothhounds, as well as cod, flounder and eels.

Sourced from the River Teign in Devon and frozen ready for use, peeler crab is a natural crustacean bait that's at home fishing estuaries, beaches, rocks and rough ground.

BASS

Peeler crab is a classic bass bait, particularly around estuaries, harbour mouths and rocky ground where crabs form part of their natural diet.

Fish a whole small peeler or a section of a larger crab on a Running Ledger or Pulley Rig.

Wrigglers Chinu Hooks are an excellent choice for a compact crab bait. For a larger presentation, step up to a Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hook.

SMOOTHHOUNDS

Peeler crab really comes into its own when targeting smoothhounds.

Fish a good-sized crab bait on a Pulley Rig or Running Ledger, using a Wrigglers Chinu or Octopus Beak Hook matched to the size of the bait.

There's no need to make the bait enormous. A neat, securely bound crab bait with the hook point completely exposed is the aim.

COD

Peeler crab is also a useful bait for cod, especially around estuaries and rough ground.

Fish it on its own or combine it with black lug or lugworm for a larger bait.

A Pulley Rig with a Wrigglers Chinu or Octopus Beak Hook makes a strong shore-fishing setup.

FLOUNDER

For flounder, scale everything down.

Use a smaller section of peeler crab on a Running Ledger or 2-Hook Flapper, with a smaller Wrigglers Chinu Hook.

Peeler can also be combined with ragworm for a natural estuary bait.

PREPARING PEELER CRAB

Remove the remaining hard shell and prepare the soft crab body to suit the size of hook you're using.

A larger crab can be divided into several baits, while a smaller crab can be used more substantially.

Secure the bait with bait elastic, binding it into a neat shape around the hook. Don't overdo the elastic—the finished bait should remain soft and natural with the hook point and gape clearly exposed.

PEELER CRAB COCKTAILS

Peeler Crab + Black Lug — excellent for cod and bass.

Peeler Crab + Lugworm — a strong general cod and bass combination.

Peeler Crab + Ragworm — particularly useful for bass and flounder in estuaries.

BEST WRIGGLERS HOOKS

Chinu Hooks — the standout Wrigglers pattern for compact peeler crab baits. Excellent for bass, smoothhounds and smaller presentations.

Octopus Beak Hooks — ideal when stepping up to a larger crab bait for smoothhounds, bass or cod.

Aberdeen Hooks — useful for smaller crab-and-worm baits on lighter shore rigs.

TOP TIP

With peeler crab, bigger isn't automatically better. Match the amount of crab to your hook and target species, bind it into a compact bait and keep the hook point clear.

For smoothhounds and bass, don't overlook fishing good-quality peeler crab on its own.
