HERRINGS

PREMIUM OILY SEA BAIT

HERRING – FROZEN SEA FISHING & PIKE BAIT

Herring is one of the classic oily fish baits for both sea anglers and pike anglers. Its high oil content, strong natural scent and bright silver skin make it an excellent bait when targeting fish that hunt or scavenge by scent.

It is extremely versatile: use it whole, halved, as a flank fillet, strip, chunk or section, with the size of the bait matched to the species you're targeting.

For sea fishing, herring is particularly effective for rays, cod, bass, huss, conger and dogfish. For freshwater predator fishing, whole or half herring makes an excellent pike deadbait.

HERRING FOR RAYS

Herring really comes into its own as a ray bait.

A good flank fillet gives you plenty of oily flesh and skin while still producing a bait that can be cast cleanly. For a bigger presentation, use a larger fillet or section of herring.

Fish it on a Pulley Pennel or Up & Over Rig with a Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hook.

For anglers who prefer circle hooks for their ray fishing, Wrigglers Mutsu Circle Hooks or True Circle Hooks are another strong option.

Bind the bait neatly with elastic, but don't cover the hook point or close the gape with a thick lump of bait.

HERRING FOR COD

For cod, cut a long strip or fillet, leaving the skin attached.

A Pulley Rig gives you a streamlined setup for casting from the shore. Smaller herring baits can be fished on Wrigglers Chinu Hooks, while larger fillets are better suited to Wrigglers Octopus Beak or Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hooks.

For a bigger winter cod bait, combine herring with squid and fish it on a Pulley Pennel.

HERRING FOR BASS

Herring strips and fillets make a good fish bait for bass.

Cut a long tapered strip from the flank, keeping the silver skin attached. This produces a neat bait with plenty of natural fish scent.

Fish it on a Running Ledger or Pulley Rig.

Use a Wrigglers Chinu Hook for a smaller strip or step up to an Octopus Beak Hook for a larger fillet.

HERRING FOR HUSS & DOGFISH

Huss and dogfish readily take fish baits, and herring allows you to put out a substantial scented bait without needing an enormous presentation.

Use a chunk, fillet or section on a Pulley, Pulley Pennel or Up & Over setup.

Wrigglers Octopus Beak Hooks are particularly suited to these larger fish baits, with Mutsu Circle and True Circle Hooks available for circle-hook presentations.

HERRING FOR CONGER

For conger fishing, herring can be stepped up considerably.

Use large sections, substantial fillets or whole smaller herring, with tackle appropriate to the size of the fish being targeted.

This is where the heavy end of the Wrigglers range becomes relevant. Wrigglers Stainless O'Shaughnessy 10/0 and 12/0 Hooks can be used for genuinely large conger baits, paired with heavy trace material and appropriately rated Wrigglers Power Swivels.

SMALL HERRING BAITS

Don't overlook herring for smaller species.

Thin strips can be used on 2-Hook and 3-Hook Flapper Rigs for whiting and mixed-species shore fishing.

Use Wrigglers Chinu or Aberdeen Hooks and keep the strip narrow enough that it doesn't mask the hook.

This also makes good use of offcuts left after preparing larger fillets.

HERRING & SQUID COCKTAIL

This is one of the best ways to toughen a herring bait.

Herring supplies the oil and scent, while squid adds strength and staying power.

Lay a strip of squid alongside the herring and bind the two together with bait elastic.

For cod and bass, fish a moderate-sized cocktail on a Pulley Rig with a Wrigglers Octopus Beak or Takumi Wide Gape Long Shank Hook.

For rays and huss, make the bait larger and fish it on a Pulley Pennel or Up & Over Rig.

HERRING FOR PIKE

Herring is also an excellent pike deadbait, and this is an important part of what makes it such a versatile frozen bait.

Its oily flesh produces a strong scent trail, particularly useful when fishing a static deadbait.

Herring can be fished whole, halved or as a section and can be ledgered on the bottom or suspended beneath a float.

Fish it on a Wrigglers Wire Pike Trace with Wrigglers Barbed Treble Hooks.

Size 8 — smaller herring and smaller deadbait sections.

Size 6 — the main all-round choice for an average herring deadbait.

Size 4 — larger whole herring and substantial deadbait presentations.

The hooks need to suit the size of the bait. A smaller herring shouldn't be loaded with oversized trebles.

When deliberately targeting pike, always use an appropriate wire trace.

WHY HERRING DESERVES A PLACE IN THE FREEZER

Herring gives anglers a lot of options from one bait.

You can cut small strips for general sea fishing, prepare larger fillets for cod and bass, step up to substantial baits for rays, huss and conger, combine it with squid for extra durability, or fish it whole as a pike deadbait.

And because the skin is considerably tougher than the flesh, leaving the silver skin attached helps produce a bait that stays on the hook far better.

TOP TIP

When preparing herring for sea fishing, cut the flesh but keep the skin intact. Put the hook through the skin and bind larger baits lightly with elastic. You'll get the attraction of the soft, oily flesh with much better bait security.

For pike, keep whole herring frozen until needed and choose your Wrigglers treble size according to the actual size of the deadbait.
